Spencer’s Jewelry & Piercing FAQs

Below you'll find commonly asked piercing questions, including descriptions, gauge sizes, average healing times and recommended piercing care instructions.

Healing times can vary from person to person. If you have any questions or concerns, you should consult with your licensed piercing professional. Wash your hands prior to cleaning or touching your new piercing. Avoid rotating or twisting jewelry while cleaning during the healing process.

What’s the best way to care for my jewelry?

Properly caring for your body jewelry is important for two reasons: it keeps the piercing site clean and healthy, and it can make your body jewelry last longer. Here are some tips for keeping up with maintenance.

Caring for Your Piercings & Jewelry DURING the Healing Process:

Keeping your jewelry and piercings clean during the healing process is a must. To clean the jewelry, use antibacterial soap and warm water. Be gentle so you don’t hurt the jewelry, but thorough so you know it’s fresh and safe to use. To clean your piercings, we recommend using H2Ocean Aftercare Spray or saline solution. Clean the piercing site twice per day during the healing process. To learn more about the necessary piercing and jewelry cleaning processes, read How to Care for Your Body Jewelry & Body Piercings.

Caring for Your Jewelry AFTER the Healing Process:

Once your piercing is healed, be sure to continue regular jewelry maintenance. To clean the jewelry, gently wash it with antibacterial soap and warm water every few days. Do not use harsh, alcohol-based chemicals. Cleaning the jewelry is important at this stage because build-up can accumulate, causing it to chip and tarnish.

How can I increase the longevity of my jewelry?

Even jewelry crafted from the highest-quality materials can chip and tarnish over time. Cleaning it can help, but there are other steps you can take.

Removing Your Jewelry to Sleep:

It’s important to remember that Spencer’s does not recommend wearing any of our jewelry to sleep, as it can become damaged or worn.

Removing Your Jewelry for Other Activities:

Spencer’s recommends that you remove your jewelry for each of the following activities:

  • Exercise or sports: Jewelry can be scratched, chipped, bent, or broken during physical activities.
  • Swimming: Chlorine can discolor or weaken the metals in your jewelry.
  • Showering or bathing: Soap can build up on your jewelry if it’s not properly removed.
  • Applying makeup, etc.: Makeup and other care can cause build-up on your jewelry if it’s not removed.

Where should I store my jewelry when it’s removed?

Store your jewelry in a safe, dry place, like a protected jewelry box or a soft pouch. This will prevent your jewelry from being lost, scratched, or exposed to dust.

Gauge Size Information:

To ensure that you select the perfect size body jewelry, please use this guide to cross-reference the length, diameter, and gauge size of your jewelry.
