Some people may say that emo died somewhere around 2009. HA! Joke’s on them. If you’re a true emo fan, you know that emo NEVER dies. It’s in our blood. It’s a part of who we are. Emo will live on forever, especially with this emo playlist crafted by our very own emo kids. It’s time to black your eyes because it’s about to get so Xx$c3neXx! Rawr (:

“I’m Not Okay (I Promise)” by My Chemical Romance
Remember all those times as a teenager when your mom would be like “what’s wrong with you?” and all you could say was “I’m not okay, TRUST ME.” Yeah, we’ve all been there. The scene never dies. Honestly, even in adulthood, I’ll be the first to admit that there are still times I’m simply not okay. -
“Ohio Is For Lovers” by Hawthorne Heights
It was a total toss-up between Ohio Is For Lovers and Niki FM, but I think we made a solid choice. This is one of the first songs I had ever heard that had screaming in it. I remember thinking “WOW, these guys are SO HARD. I wish I could date a guy that was this badass!” Crank the volume up for this one! -
“Sugar, We’re Goin’ Down” by Fall Out Boy
A true classic. If you are actually a scene kid, you know that this is the jam of all jams. You’re at the club, as an adult, and you’re singing every single word… PROUDLY. The emo in you is FLOWING through your blood and pouring out of you as you two-step and work up a sweat for 3 minutes and 45 seconds. Don’t even try to pretend like you don’t like this song. EVERYONE likes this song. -
“Perfect” by Simple Plan
The perfect way to relive your teenage angst is by listening to this song. You’ll remember all the days of crying into your pillow with the radio on, turned up so loud, so no one heard you screaming. Life was tough back then. You and your boyfriend of two days broke up because he liked SAMANTHA more, and your parents grounded you for staying out past 6 p.m. Simple Plan said it best: “You don’t know what it’s like when nothing feels alright, you don’t know what it’s like to be like meeeeeeee!” -
“I Miss You” by blink-182
Every teenage girl going through a breakup had this in their MySpace bio: –>~*Don’t w8ste ur time oN me, Ur already the voice inside mY head.. I . M I S S . Y O U*~ u kno who u r. <– No matter how much you cringe at the thought of heartbroken 17-year-old you trolling the Internet with your relationship drama, this song will always be a banger. -
“Numb” by Linkin Park
The emo community went through great heartbreak when we lost Chester, and that’s why this song should be featured on every playlist ever. If you thought you appreciated this song before, you’ll have a new appreciation every single time it comes on shuffle. Thanks for the music, Chester! We love you. -
“Check Yes, Juliet” by We the Kings
Okay, so I know you are probably thinking the same thing I am, right? The best part of this song is the claps. If you don’t know what I’m talking about, you’re clearly a poser. Go listen to it RIGHT NOW and feel sorry for yourself like a REAL emo kid would do. -
“Miserable at Best” by Mayday Parade – AKA the entire album
To be completely honest, I think that the entire A Lesson in Romantics album deserves to be on this playlist. “Jamie All Over,” “When I Get Home You’re So Dead…” I mean seriously, there are way too many to choose JUST ONE. If I had to… I could live without this album, but without this album, I’d be Miserable at Best. -
“Konstantine” by Something Corporate
Something Corporate is one of the most underrated bands in the emo scene. #JustSaying. “Konstantine” is an eight-minute masterpiece, and if you’ve never heard it, you’re totally missing out. Add it to your playlist and enjoy a wild rollercoaster ride of feels that you haven’t felt since seventh grade. -
“The Taste of Ink” by The Used
Remember when staying up until 4 a.m. was easy? This song is the ANTHEM of all-nighters. Around 3:45 everyone was itching to yell “The taste of ink is getting old, it’s four o’clock in the f*cking morning!” No one knew what it meant, and I’m pretty sure we still don’t know what it means now, but it was still fun! Plus, Bert McCracken was such a babe, even if he didn’t shower for what looked like months. -
“The Best of Me” by The Starting Line
This song is literally the definition of emo: An acoustic beginning that plays out of the left speaker only, followed by a sick drum fill and distorted guitars. I can see every emo kid with their horns up screaming about how “the worst is over.” Well, joke’s on us! I’m an adult now and the worst is certainly not over. -
“Existentialism on Prom Night” by Straylight Run
Can we get a show of hands to see how many emo kids learned this song on our battery-powered Casio keyboards? You and your BFF would have a sleepover and play the song over and over again until you #NailedIt. Don’t even try to deny it… I still play it every time I see a piano. -
“There’s No ‘I’ in Team” by Taking Back Sunday | “Seventy Times 7” by Brand New
Realistically, you could have both of these songs on one playlist, but you’d be lying to yourself if you didn’t prefer one over the other. Both songs are interpretations of a falling out between the lead singer of Brand New, Jesse Lacey, and the guitarist of Taking Back Sunday, John Nolan. These tracks feature the same lyrics, making this battle for the best song even harder to decide. Whose side are you on? -
“Misery Business” by Paramore
To the girl who stole your boyfriend in high school: you’re still a whore J. Hayley Williams really took her lyricism to a new level with this bad boy. Thanks for writing one for the ladies, girlfriend. You’re the real MVP. -
“Hands Down” by Dashboard Confessional
Hands down, this is the best emo song I could ever remember. I always remember the sound of the stereo, the dim of the soft lights, the scent of your hair… you get the point. -
“Note to Self” by From First to Last
Skrillex who? We know him as Sonny Moore, and we’ll #Nvrfrgt. Before his days of pushing buttons to make noise, Sonny was emo royalty. We really hope he didn’t forget where he came from. Do you ever listen to this song and realize you miss yourself terribly, Sonny? I may have to write a book entitled From Emo to Dubstep: This Is What We Call a Tragedy: A Sonny Moore Story. -
“Until the Day I Die” by Story of the Year
Would every emo kid agree that “Until the Day I Die” was one of two good “Story of the Year” songs? It was a toss-up between this one and “Anthem of our Dying Day,” but we figured screaming “My hands are at your throat and I think I hate you (I think I hate you!)” was the most angsty choice. Emo = violent lyrics that you would actually never practice in real life. -
“Bodybag” by Hit the Lights
Speaking of violent lyrics… This is the anthem for every emo kid who’s super pissed off. It was really annoying when you couldn’t log onto AIM because your mom was on the phone and your Internet source was dial-up. Believe me, I get it. This was the song I played at max volume on my boom box to freak out my parents. How about you? -
“The Curse of Curves” by Cute is What We Aim For
As a veteran emo kid, I want to make it very clear that “Bieber hair” was not created by Justin Bieber. Shant started the trend. Don’t believe me? Check out the video here. #BringBackEmoBangs2k1 -
“Face Down” by The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus
Ah, an anthem for girls everywhere. Ronnie Winter was a superhero. Emo kid pro tip: The radio edit is lame. The album version has way more screaming in it which obviously means The Red Jumpsuit Apparatus is super badass. So, make sure you add the cooler version to your playlist. -
“Lying Is The Most Fun A Girl Can Have Without Taking Her Clothes Off” by Panic! At The Disco
We know that Panic! is still a thing, but Brenden Urie sure as heck ain’t rockin’ eyeliner anymore. I remember falling in love him his emo aesthetic like it was yesterday. *Sigh* This song was the perfect away message after you and your high school soulmate broke up: *iis iit Stiill m3 thAt maKeS u SweAt ~ am ii who u think about iin b3d?* xoxo go0dniGht </3 -
“Dear Maria, Count Me In” by All Time Low
Did we ever find out what the story was at the bottom of that bottle? Prob not. All Time Low was so many people’s first taste of emo music, which led to developing a better taste for it (thankfully) later on. They get so much shit in the emo community because they’re practically a pop boy band, but c’mon. Who didn’t love singing their lungs out to this song? Dear Maria, count us IN! -
“The Anthem” by Good Charlotte
Emo kids stick together. And this is the song that everyone would listen to when there were h8rs talking smack. Throw all your hands up, sing if you’re with me! Being an emo kid is a lifestyle that you chose to portray for the rest of your life.
